Whirlpool is the one brand in this list where you cannot start diagnosing until you know which of three quite different machines you own. A semi-automatic Ace, a fully automatic Whitemagic top load and a Supreme Care front loader share a badge and almost nothing else. Most of the bad quotes we are asked to second-opinion come from someone pricing the wrong one.

Semi-automatic: check the capacitor before anyone mentions a motor. An Ace has two tubs, two motors and a pair of mechanical timer knobs. When the wash tub hums, gets warm and will not turn — or turns if you give the pulsator a push — that is the classic signature of a failed motor start capacitor. It is a small cylindrical part clipped inside the base, it costs a few hundred rupees, and it is the single most common cause of a dead Whirlpool wash tub we see. A motor replacement quoted for that symptom, without the capacitor having been tested first, is the thing to walk away from. The second most common Ace fault is the timer knob itself: the contacts inside a mechanical timer wear, and the machine stops mid-cycle or refuses to start on one setting while working on another.

Semi-automatic spin tub not spinning: the lid switch, then the brake. The spin tub will not run with the lid open — there is an interlock switch under the lid edge, and when it fails the machine behaves exactly as though the spin motor has died. It is a two-minute check. If the switch is good, the next suspect is the brake band that should release when the lid closes, not the motor.

Fully automatic top load: ZPF, and what it does not mean. Whirlpool markets Zero Pressure Fill on the Whitemagic range — an inlet valve designed to fill from an overhead tank with almost no head pressure, which genuinely matters in Bengaluru flats where the tank sits barely above the machine. Because ZPF machines fill fine at pressures that would defeat an ordinary valve, a Whitemagic that has become slow to fill is usually not a pressure problem at all: it is a scaled-up inlet mesh. Bengaluru's borewell water leaves a hard chalky deposit on that mesh, and clearing it is a cleaning job, not a parts job. The other top-load pattern worth knowing is the water level pressure switch and its air hose — a hose that has slipped or cracked makes the machine over- or under-fill and is frequently misread as a board fault.

Fully automatic top load: it is belt driven. Unlike an LG Direct Drive, a Whitemagic drives the drum through a motor, belt and a clutch/gearbox assembly. A tub that fills and drains but will not agitate or spin points at the belt or the clutch long before it points at electronics. That is a mechanical repair with a clear part cost, and it is worth getting a written quote for it because the gearbox is the one Whirlpool part where the sensible answer is sometimes to replace the machine.

Front load: the same rules as any front loader. On Supreme Care units the recurring Bengaluru problems are the ones humidity causes everywhere — a mouldy door bellow that starts to smell and eventually leaks, and a drain pump filter that nobody has opened since the machine was installed. Check the filter flap before accepting any diagnosis that involves the pump itself.
