Before you replace a washing machine motor, check these first

A motor replacement is one of the larger bills on a washing machine, and it is quoted far more often than it is actually needed. Several cheaper parts fail with symptoms that are indistinguishable from motor failure to anyone who does not test properly.

Carbon brushes. Universal motors -- the type in most front-load machines -- transmit power through two carbon blocks that press against the commutator. They are designed to wear down and be replaced, exactly like brake pads. When they wear past their limit the motor stops turning, sparks visibly, or works intermittently. Replacing brushes costs a fraction of a motor. Anyone quoting a motor should be able to tell you the measured brush length.

The capacitor. The capacitor supplies the phase shift that produces starting torque. A degraded one gives you a motor that hums but will not start turning, or one that starts only when you help the drum along by hand. It is a small, inexpensive component and it fails routinely -- especially on supplies with frequent voltage dips and surges.

The tacho coil. This small sensor tells the control board how fast the motor is actually turning. When it fails, the board cannot confirm the commanded speed and shuts the motor down as a protective measure. The motor is completely healthy; the board simply cannot see it working.

Wiring and connectors. Motors sit at the bottom of a vibrating machine in a damp room. Connectors corrode and harnesses chafe. An intermittent motor fault that changes when the machine is nudged is a wiring fault, not a motor fault.

The commutator surface. Carbon dust and glazing build up on the commutator over years. Cleaning it can restore proper contact and is part of a competent brush replacement rather than a separate job.

Genuine motor failure -- a shorted or open winding -- does happen, and it is confirmed with a meter, not by elimination or by ear. When a motor really has gone, we will show you the reading. On an older machine it is also the point where replacing the machine may make more sense than the repair, and we will say so.

How do I know if the motor is really the problem?

It has to be confirmed with electrical testing of the windings, not inferred from behaviour. Worn brushes, a failed capacitor, a bad tacho coil and corroded wiring all mimic motor failure, so each of those must be ruled out first.

Are carbon brushes a repair or a wear item?

A wear item, by design -- much like brake pads. They are meant to be replaced periodically over the life of the machine, and doing so costs a small fraction of what a motor replacement costs.

The motor hums but doesn't turn. Is it dead?

Usually not. A hum without rotation is the classic signature of a failed start capacitor, or of a mechanical jam preventing the drum from moving. Both are much cheaper to resolve than a motor.

Is replacing a washing machine motor worth the money?

On a newer or premium machine, often yes. On an older mid-range machine the motor cost plus labour can approach the price of a new machine, and we will give you that comparison honestly rather than just quoting the repair.

Does voltage fluctuation damage washing machine motors?

It damages the capacitor and the control board considerably more often than the motor windings themselves. In areas with an unstable supply, a good stabiliser is worthwhile insurance for the electronics.
